Mersey’s regional drug training and information centre runs one of the busiest syringe exchange schemes in Britain. Soon after opening, staff found they had to make controversial decisions about how far to go in making the scheme attractive to injectors and meeting their needs for equipment and advice. With AIDS prevention now the overriding priority, within months they had re-written the rule book on dealing with drug misusers. Two nurses from the scheme share the lessons of the Liverpool experience.
