Surveys of solvent misuse in the UK in the 1980s confirm that, after cannabis, solvents are the most widely used substances. There has been no discernible drop in usage over the decade; typically 4 to 8 per cent of secondary school-age children have tried sniffing. Some surveys show the proportion of girl users as high as or higher than boys.
